University Hospitals announces Community Benefit contributions for 2016 totaled $304 million

CLEVELAND – In its newly released Community Benefits Report covering 2016, University Hospitals demonstrates that it continues to address health and economic disparities in Greater Cleveland.

The report states that the health system’s community benefit expenditures totaled $304 million for 2016. During the past decade, UH has invested more than $2.31 billion in community benefit expenditures.

UH works with its community to identify and address the region’s most pressing health care needs through research, charitable care, education, training and community outreach. 

UH follows very strict Internal Revenue Service guidelines to determine what counts as community benefit.  UH’s total community benefit spending includes: Charity care ($45 million); community health improvement services, programs and support ($46 million); Medicaid shortfall ($127 million); research ($20 million); and education and training ($66 million).

Five hospitals in UH system receive “A” for patient safety in Fall 2017 Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade

CLEVELAND – The Leapfrog Group, a national nonprofit health care ratings organization, today released new Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grades. The Safety Grade assigns letter grades of A, B, C, D and F to hospitals nationwide based on their performance in preventing medical errors, infections and other harms. University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center, UH Geauga Medical Center, UH St. John Medical Center, UH Samaritan Medical Center, plus joint-venture hospital Southwest General Health Center, are five of 832 hospitals awarded an “A” for their commitment to keeping patients safe and meeting the highest safety standards in the U.S.
 
“Earning an “A” from Leapfrog is a significant recognition that our hospitals accept with pride,” said William Annable, MD, Chief Quality Officer and Director, UH Quality Institute and
UH Chief Medical Officer. “This achievement is never seen as any one individual’s efforts but rather as a team effort of all caregivers and leaders at these hospitals. It speaks to the dedication to quality and safety that is a core value for all UH employees.”

Top Medicare/Medicaid administrator Seema Verma meets CEO and other UH leaders

CLEVELAND – Administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services
(CMS) Seema Verma met Oct. 23 with University Hospitals CEO Thomas F. Zenty III and other UH leaders to learn more about regulatory burdens placed on hospitals.
 
Her visit was part of a national listening tour on which she has embarked to hear from doctors and providers about how to reduce burdensome regulations so they can focus on providing high quality healthcare to patients. CMS is the U.S. Health Department agency that oversees Medicare and Medicaid.
