Expands care provided by UH Harrington Heart & Vascular Institute

CLEVELAND – Every year, approximately one million Americans suffer from a heart attack which can lead to cardiogenic shock. Without immediate treatment, patients in cardiogenic shock have a 70-90 percent mortality rate.
In honor of a generous $5 million gift from Angela and James Hambrick, and in recognition of the importance of improving the heart care in Northeast Ohio and beyond, University Hospitals is establishing a new Center of Excellence – the Hambrick Center for Cardiac Recovery at UH Harrington Heart & Vascular Institute.
“The Hambricks’ gift will help positively change the lives of patients around the region and will set the bar for national standards in cardiac recovery care,” said Thomas F. Zenty III, UH Chief Executive Officer. “UH already has one of the lowest mortality rates for cardiogenic shock patients among the U.S. News & World Report top-ranked heart centers. This generous donation will allow us to further our commitment to improving survival rates in Northeast Ohio and across the country.”
The Hambrick Center will serve as a national model for employing coordinated care to improve medical outcomes for patients suffering from cardiogenic shock.
With a critical one-hour treatment window after cardiogenic shock occurs, timing is crucial. A coordinated team of physicians, nurses and other cardiovascular experts at seven UH locations are currently prepared to treat cardiogenic shock patients.
