Partnership with UH Ahuja Medical Center Brings Hands-On Learning to Beachwood Medical Academy

Beachwood High School students aspiring for in-demand careers in the field of medicine will gain a valuable head start, thanks to a partnership with University Hospitals Ahuja Medical Center. The Beachwood-based medical center will host a two-day camp August 9-10. Students will earn CPR certification, participate in lung and heart dissections, and observe demonstrations in robotic surgery.

The camp is part of the Beachwood City School District’s innovative Medical Academy, which prepares students for competitive pre-med programs through advanced coursework and hospital immersion experiences.

“The learning objective is simple: for students to have fun and explore exciting topics in healthcare,” said Dr. David Rosenberg, Medical Director of the University Hospitals Ahuja Lung Center.

Inspiring a future generation of physicians and healthcare providers is a passion for Dr. Rosenberg. The Beachwood alum (Class of ‘66) helped establish the Medical Academy in 2014. In addition to mentoring Beachwood students, Dr. Rosenberg teaches physicians in training as an assistant clinical professor of medicine at the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine.

“I am happy that our partnership with Ahuja is returning this summer,” said Linda LoGalbo, Director of Curriculum and Instruction. “I am incredibly grateful to Dr. Rosenberg for his leadership in spearheading the camp.”

Dr. Rosenberg, who was inducted this year into the BHS Gallery of Success, has been instrumental in ensuring the camp provides students with authentic, hands-on experiences in a variety of healthcare disciplines, including cardiology, pulmonology, neurosurgery, emergency medicine and sports medicine. In addition to the laboratory dissections, students will explore ultrasound technology and view a three-dimensional simulation of the brain.

“I believe experiential learning, especially in the formative years, imprints importance in a subject area,” said Dr. Rosenberg.

Another key goal of the camp is to highlight a variety of career pathways in the medical field. Students will learn about leadership opportunities in the fields of nursing and hospital administration.

“A career in healthcare is not a nine-to-five job,” said Dr. Rosenberg. “Advances in healthcare present many exciting professional opportunities over time.”

Dr. Rosenberg’s career attests to the varied opportunities within the field of medicine. Board certified in internal medicine, pulmonary disease and occupational medicine, Dr. Rosenberg has served as an industry consultant and, most recently, helped start the UH COVID Recovery Clinic for patients with COVID Long-Haul Syndrome.

Ultimately, Dr. Rosenberg hopes the camp will inspire students to find their calling in healthcare.

“We want the kids to have fun and transition to careers in medicine,” said Dr. Rosenberg.
