University Hospitals receives $5 million gift from Roe Green Foundation

Monday, November 17, 2014
CLEVELAND – University Hospitals (UH) has established the Roe Green Center for Travel Medicine in recognition of a $5 million gift from the Roe Green Foundation. The gift will enable the Center to reach more travelers and advance UH physician-investigators’ study of emerging infectious diseases.

The gift coincides with a time of tremendous growth in international travel that is expected to continue well into the future. According to the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), the number of international tourist arrivals worldwide reached a record 1 billion in 2013, an increase of 5 percent over 2012. A long-term forecast by UNWTO predicts that by 2030, the number will reach 1.8 billion. Furthermore, it is projected that travel to emerging destinations will grow at twice the rate as to regions with advanced economies.

“Safe travel is more essential than ever in an increasingly global world,” says Robert Salata, MD, Chief of Infectious Diseases at UH Case Medical Center and Professor of Medicine at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. “For nearly 45 years, we have provided international travelers with important preventative care and education. In addition, we have evaluated and managed health problems in returning travelers, foreign visitors and immigrants. Thanks to Roe Green’s generosity and vision, this gift will take our program to a new level and enable it to continue to be at the forefront of emerging health issues globally.”
