The Conneaut Foundation Gifts $25,000 to UH Conneaut Medical Center
September 20, 2022
ASHTABULA COUNTY, Ohio—The Conneaut Foundation has generously donated $25,000 to University Hospitals (UH) Conneaut Medical Center, making them a signature sponsor of the hospital’s Centennial Celebration. Next month, in October, the hospital reflects on 100 years of serving Conneaut while looking ahead and continuing to grow their services in the community. This gift will specifically be used to upgrade and expand cancer treatment services at the hospital’s UH Seidman Cancer Center to better serve patients close to home.
Mike Joslin is a local businessman who has been on The Conneaut Foundation Board for twelve years, and currently serves as President. His wife, Linda, was diagnosed with a rare cancer called mediastinal diffuse lymphoma and passed away 16 years ago. He remembers continuously traveling to downtown Cleveland, more than an hour away, for care. UH Conneaut was only five minutes from their home, so receiving treatments there when possible helped to relieve some of the stress caused by a cancer diagnosis.
“Our contribution to this project was proudly and unanimously approved by the board,” Joslin said. “We can’t think of a better cause to support than the hospital that gave The Conneaut Foundation its start way back in 1997. It is a place our board and community use on a daily basis, and is so connected to each and every one of us. We couldn’t think of any project more worthy of our support. We look forward to seeing how this newly expanded facility will benefit our beautiful hometown.”
UH Conneaut has a rich history of compassionate care in the community, providing the highest level of comprehensive medical and surgical services, emergency medical care, in-patient hospital services and outpatient testing and services for residents in Ashtabula County and surrounding areas. Basic cancer treatment services have been available at UH Conneaut for decades, but more recently, enhanced services have been provided. Renovations will begin later this year to:
- Create a new infusion suite within the outpatient specialty care unit.
- Build private infusion rooms and an ADA accessible bathroom.
- Enhance aesthetics to ensure privacy and a healing environment that reflects the expert care, compassion and skill provided by the providers, nurses and staff.
“We are immensely grateful to The Conneaut Foundation for their continued partnership on our UH Seidman Cancer Center expansion project,” said Jason Glowczewski, PharmD, MBA, FASHP, Chief Operating Officer of UH Conneaut, Geneva and Geauga medical centers. “Cancer is the second leading cause of death in Ashtabula County, and many patients who were previously diagnosed had to travel out of the county to find treatment appropriate treatment options. We’ve embarked on an ambitious journey to expand our cancer centers at both UH Conneaut and Geneva, so patients will receive even more advanced care in a comfortable, healing environment that is in close proximity to their homes.”
The Conneaut Foundation previously donated $50,000 in 2020 to support the expansion, and continues to hold community fundraising events to benefit the cancer center project. In 2018, an initial gift of $150,000 from The Ashtabula Foundation helped to kick-start the project and with subsequent gifts from The Kendall Foundation and donations from the community, just over
$430,000 total has been raised.
The total cost to expand cancer services in Ashtabula County is more than $500,000. Funds raised through the UH Conneaut Centennial Celebration will help close the gap. UH Conneaut Medical Center will be hosting a two-day event Oct. 22-23, 2022 to commemorate the hospital’s legacy. Events will consist of a celebration dinner and community day. The Community Day will be held at the hospital on Sunday, Oct. 23 from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and is free to the public.
