Seriously Ill University Hospitals Patient Witnesses Daughters Wedding

CLEVELAND – A University Hospitals patient attended her daughter’s wedding thanks to help from her caregivers.

Margy Poorman, an Avon native, has been hospitalized since January of this year dealing with a variety of illnesses and complications including liposarcoma. Her daughter, Abby, had planned to marry her fiancé Brian Kucbel in September. As the 65-year-old’s situation worsened, Abby wanted to make sure her mother saw her walk down the aisle.

On July 2, the University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center chapel served as the wedding venue. Poorman’s nurse, Kayla Wolf, took over as impromptu wedding planner – doing makeup, hair and even baking and decorating cupcakes.

“My favorite part about my job has always been patients like Margy,” Wolf said. “Ensuring that Margy got to see her daughter get married was such an amazing day for everyone involved. It’s a day I’ll surely remember for the rest of my career.” Poorman’s sisters bought her a special outfit and Wolf helped her get dressed.

Poorman watched as hospital chaplain, the Rev. Wayne Decker, presided over the marriage of her daughter. Many family, including the bride’s sister Kelsey, friends and staff also attended the Tuesday afternoon service.“It was wonderful and it meant so much to Abby and Kelsey and my beautiful sisters. It was a beautiful day and everyone couldn’t be happier. There were lots of tears – happy tears,” said Margy.

After the ceremony, family and friends gathered in the hospital atrium for pictures.
