CLEVELAND, Ohio – University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center has been recognized as a Best Hospital for 2021-22 by U.S. News & World Report. UH Cleveland Medical Center ranked in five of 15 adult specialties. It is ranked third among all hospitals in Ohio.
The annual Best Hospitals rankings and ratings, now in their 32st year, are designed to assist patients and their doctors in making informed decisions about where to receive care for challenging health conditions or for common elective procedures.
UH Cleveland Medical Center ranked in the Top-50 nationally in Cancer (38); Cardiology & Heart Surgery (34); Ear, Nose & Throat (46); Geriatrics (40), and Neurology & Neurosurgery (39). Its Gastroenterology and GI Surgery; Pulmonology and Lung Surgery, and Urology specialties were designated as high performing. U.S. News also named UH Cleveland Medical Center as high-performing for 15 common adult procedures and conditions.
Every Top-50 ranking places UH in the top one percent of hospitals nationally. Only a small fraction rank highly in as many categories as UH Cleveland Medical Center does.
“Our care givers are dedicated to providing the highest quality health care to our patients. We are proud of their achievements in providing care to the patients with the most serious and complex needs, and for their ceaseless efforts during this unprecedented pandemic that challenged us in 2020,” said Cliff Megerian, MD, FACS, Chief Executive Officer of University Hospitals.
For the 2021-22 rankings and ratings, U.S. News evaluated more than 4,750 medical centers nationwide in 15 specialties and 17 procedures and conditions. In the 15 specialty areas, 175 hospitals were ranked in at least one specialty.
“UH Cleveland Medical Center consistently ranks among the best hospitals in Ohio and the United States,” said Daniel Simon, MD, President of UH Cleveland Medical Center, and Chief Clinical and Scientific Officer for UH. “Our caregivers strive to provide compassionate, evidenced-based care while also teaching the next generation of caregivers and advancing the frontiers of medicine through research.”
The U.S. News Best Hospitals methodologies in most areas of care are based largely on objective measures such as risk-adjusted survival and discharge-to-home rates, volume, and quality of nursing, among other care-related indicators.
“This year’s expanded report from U.S. News includes new ratings for important procedures and conditions to help each patient pick the right hospital for the type of care they need,” said Ben Harder, managing editor and chief of health analysis at U.S. News. “Hospitals faced incredible challenges this past year, and the best of them have provided great care throughout the pandemic and continue to offer excellent care today.”
