Cliff Megerian, MD, CEO

CLEVELAND, Ohio – University Hospitals (UH) is proud to announce that Cliff A. Megerian, MD, FACS, CEO and Jane and Henry Meyer Chief Executive Officer Distinguished Chair, was recognized by Modern Healthcare (MH) as one of the 100 Most Influential People in Healthcare of 2023. The complete ranking and profiles of all honorees can be found in the Dec. 4 issue of MH magazine.

This prestigious recognition program acknowledges and honors individuals who are deemed by their peers and the senior editors of Modern Healthcare to be the most influential figures in the industry in terms of leadership and impact.

Specifically, honorees were evaluated on the actions taken to help their organizations achieve or exceed financial, operational and clinical goals, and the measurable results that were achieved; to improve the organization’s culture, particularly regarding the workforce and its sense of belonging along with diversity, equity and inclusion efforts; and to be a leading voice in the industry.

“I’m honored to be included among this esteemed list of notable leaders in healthcare,” said Dr. Megerian. “It’s important to acknowledge that this recognition also highlights the tremendous work done by our more than 32,000 caregivers who have excelled in making a difference in patient care. I’m proud and humbled to lead our UH Hometown Team that is earning such praise on a national level.”

Dr. Megerian received notable praise for his efforts around his leadership to support investments in personalized cancer care, pediatric care, research and innovation, health equity and facilities with the health system’s recently announced $2 billion fundraising campaign—the largest in the organization’s history. Among other achievements this year, Harrington Discovery Institute at UH teamed with the University of Oxford to launch the Oxford-Harrington Rare Disease Centre Therapeutics Accelerator, with the goal of developing 40 new therapies for rare diseases into clinical trials in the next decade. UH also completed a $236 million expansion of UH Ahuja Medical Center to provide new and expanded services for the community this year, under Dr. Megerian’s leadership. Dr. Megerian holds court with an impressive list of industry leaders, as well as high-level government administrators and elected officials, academics, and thought leaders.

“The 2023 honorees on our 100 Most Influential People in Healthcare reflect the providers, insurers, technology firms, government leaders, investors and others who have made oversized contributions to the industry in the past year,” said Mary Ellen Podmolik, editor-in-chief of Modern Healthcare. “Our ranked list honors the C-suite decision-makers using their clout and influence to lead their organizations and make sweeping changes that affect patient care.”
